Intresting facts

Rhinoceroses are universally recognized by their massive bodies, stumpy legs and either one or two dermal horns

Rhinos are one of the five biggest surviving in Afica

rhino is the second largest land mammal next to the elephant. The five species range in weight from 750 pounds to 8,000 pounds and stand anywhere from four and a half to six feet tall.

Biologists estimate that wild rhinos live up to 35 years. In captivity, a rhino may live 40 years.

Males and females frequently fight during courtship, sometimes leading to serious wounds inflicted by their horns.

Rhinoceroses get their name from their horns. The word rhinoceros comes from the Greek rhino (nose) and ceros (horn). Rhino horns are made of keratin, like our fingernails and hair.

Inherited and leaned behaviors

A large herbivore and “odd-toed ungulate,” rhinoceros are related to horses and zebra, and tapir. Rhinoehaviorss are known for their bad eyesight, good hearing, and that they like to roll in mud. Often you’ll see an oxpicker or “tick bird” with African rhinocerocs

Rhinos are known to communicate with grunts, snorts, snuffs and occasionally whistles. They seem to only use this method of communication when in a group, various individual vocalizations have been recorded. It is not presently known what these sounds mean or why they are used.

Rhinos live mainly solitary lives and establish their own territories. Males and females engage in courtship during which they may fight. Baby rhinos are born after a gestation period of 14 to 18 months. Although they are able to eat vegetation when they are as young as one week old, they nurse for over a year.

habitat and environment

Rhino habitat ranges from savannas to dense forests in tropical and subtropical regions.

Rhinoceroses are fairly hardy animals and can survive in a range of different habitat types. They can naturally be found throughout Asia and Africa and their habitat ranges from dense rainforests and swamps to grassy plains.Of course, there are basic requirements for the natural habitat of rhinos, as there are with all animals. They require food, shelter and water in order to survive. So, there needs to be enough vegetation to sustain them, trees and shrubs that cast shade to protect them from the sun and rain, and water holes to quench their thirst. Rhino species love wallowing in the mud, which cools them and protects them from irritating parasites and sunburn. Therefore, they seek out habitats that have water and mud holes.

Habitat loss also threatens rhinos, especially in southeast Asia and India, as human populations rise and forests are degraded or destroyed.

very few rhinos survive outside protected areas. And all five species are threatened, primarily by poaching.
